RENTAL ALERT: Please Read Before Paying Any Fees.
A quick heads-up for anyone looking for rentals in Monrovia or in the Los Angeles area. Please be very cautious before sending any money or personal information. Never pay an application fee, deposit, or any upfront charges before you’ve seen the property in person and confirmed it is legitimate. Unfortunately, rental scams are common.
Scammers often
~Copy photos from Zillow, Redfin, or old listings
~Pose as owners or property managers
~Ask for application fees or deposits to “hold” a property
~Make excuses for why you can’t tour the home
Before applying
~Visit the property in person
~Verify ownership or the property manager
~Confirm you’re dealing with the actual decision-maker
Before you send money
~Have a signed lease agreement
~You should exchange a cashier's check for keys
~Don't wire/Zelle/Venmo or in any way send money to an unknown account. If the property owner will accept digital payments, it should be clearly outlined in the lease.
If someone cannot or will not show you the property, that is a MAJOR red flag!
Also remember—you are sharing sensitive personal information in rental applications. Take your time and protect yourself.
If a deal looks too good to be true, it usually is. Stay safe out there!
